Hik-Connect Guide for End Users: Features, Setup & Common Questions
If you have a Hikvision CCTV or video intercom system, you may already be using Hik-Connect to access your security system from your mobile phone.
Hik-Connect allows compatible security devices to be managed remotely through a mobile application, giving homeowners and businesses convenient access to their security systems even when they are away from the property.
Depending on your equipment, Hik-Connect can be used for CCTV live viewing, video playback, notifications and video intercom functions.
In this guide, Star Security explains some of the most useful Hik-Connect features and answers common questions from everyday users.
What Is Hik-Connect?
Hik-Connect is Hikvision’s mobile application and cloud-based service for compatible security products.
It allows users to connect supported devices such as:
CCTV recorders
IP cameras
Video intercom systems
Access control devices
Other compatible Hikvision equipment
Once your system has been properly configured and linked to your account, you can access supported functions through your smartphone.
What Can I Do With Hik-Connect?
The functions available depend on the equipment connected to your system.
For CCTV users, common features include:
Live camera viewing
CCTV playback
Event notifications
Saving snapshots or video clips
Viewing multiple cameras
Sharing device access
For compatible video intercom systems, additional functions can include:
Receiving visitor calls
Viewing the entrance
Two-way communication
Remote unlocking
Receiving notifications
Not every feature is available on every device, so the available functions will depend on the equipment and system configuration.
Viewing Your CCTV Cameras
One of the most commonly used Hik-Connect features is remote CCTV viewing.
Once your recorder or cameras are connected to Hik-Connect, you can select the device from the application and view your cameras remotely.
This allows you to check your property while you are:
At work
Overseas
Travelling
Away from home
Managing another location
For businesses with multiple cameras, Hik-Connect can also provide convenient mobile access without having to be physically present at the premises.
How Do I Playback CCTV Footage?
If your CCTV system is recording to an NVR, DVR or other supported storage device, recorded footage can generally be accessed through Hik-Connect.
Select the relevant camera and playback function, then choose the date and approximate time of the incident you want to review.
The amount of historical footage available depends on factors such as:
Hard drive capacity
Number of cameras
Camera resolution
Recording settings
Recording schedule
Video compression
Amount of activity being recorded
If older footage is no longer available, it may already have been overwritten by newer recordings.
Can I Save CCTV Footage to My Phone?
Depending on the device and application functions available, users can save snapshots or portions of recorded footage while reviewing an incident.
If an important incident occurs, it is good practice to retrieve the required footage as soon as possible rather than assuming it will remain stored indefinitely.
CCTV recorders typically overwrite older recordings once their available storage becomes full.
Can Other Family Members or Staff Use Hik-Connect?
Yes. Supported devices can be shared with other Hik-Connect users.
This can be useful for:
Homes
Sharing CCTV or intercom access with family members.
Businesses
Providing appropriate users with access to selected security devices.
Where possible, we generally recommend using proper account-sharing functions rather than having multiple people share the same account credentials.
This makes access easier to manage when users change in the future.
Can Hik-Connect Work With a Video Intercom?
Yes, compatible video intercom systems can work with Hik-Connect.
When properly configured, an incoming call from the entrance can be received through the mobile application.
This means you may be able to:
Visitor presses intercom
→ Your phone receives the call
→ See the visitor
→ Speak to the visitor
→ Grant access where supported
This is particularly convenient for landed properties where homeowners may want to manage visitors or deliveries even when they are away.
Can I Unlock My Door or Gate From Hik-Connect?
Depending on the intercom, access control and gate configuration, remote unlocking may be available.
For example, a compatible video intercom could be connected to an electric lock or gate control system.
After verifying the visitor through the intercom, an authorised user may then release the connected entrance.
Whether this is possible depends on the equipment and how the entrance system has been designed.
What Happens If I Change My Phone?
Changing your phone does not necessarily mean your CCTV system needs to be configured again.
If your devices are properly linked to your Hik-Connect account, installing Hik-Connect on the new phone and signing into the appropriate account may restore access to your devices.
It is therefore important to know which account owns the security system.
This becomes particularly important when changing phones, changing employees or taking over an existing security system.
What If I Forget My Hik-Connect Password?
Use the account recovery options provided through Hik-Connect.
The recovery process may require access to the email address or mobile number associated with the account.
For this reason, businesses should avoid registering important security systems under the personal account of an employee who may eventually leave the company.
Where possible, ownership and account management should be planned properly when the system is installed.
Why Does Hik-Connect Show My Device as Offline?
A device showing offline does not automatically mean that the CCTV cameras or recorder have failed.
Remote access depends on several components working together.
Possible causes can include:
Internet connection problems
Router issues
Network changes
Recorder or device being powered off
Network cable issues
Configuration changes
Hik-Connect connectivity issues
A useful first check is to determine whether the CCTV system is still operating locally.
For example:
Can you still see the cameras on the local CCTV monitor?
If yes, the cameras and recorder may still be functioning and the issue could instead relate to network or remote connectivity.
I Changed My Router or Internet Provider and Hik-Connect Stopped Working
This is another situation users may encounter.
Changing your router, network configuration or internet service can affect devices connected to the network.
If your CCTV or intercom system loses its network connection after the change, remote access may also stop working.
Before resetting equipment or changing settings randomly, it is better to determine how the existing security system is connected to the network.
Unnecessary configuration changes can make troubleshooting more difficult.
Why Can I See My CCTV but Not Playback?
If live viewing works but recorded playback is unavailable, the issue may relate to recording rather than remote connectivity.
Things that may need to be checked include:
Hard drive status
Recording schedule
Storage availability
Camera recording configuration
Selected playback date and time
If an incident is important, check the recording as soon as possible.
Why Am I Not Receiving Notifications?
Notifications depend on more than simply having Hik-Connect installed.
Depending on the system, notification settings may involve:
Device event configuration
Motion or event detection settings
Hik-Connect notification settings
Smartphone notification permissions
Device compatibility
If live viewing works but notifications do not, it does not necessarily mean the entire system is faulty.
The event and notification configuration may need to be checked.
Before Contacting Technical Support
If you’re experiencing a problem with Hik-Connect, providing some basic information can make troubleshooting much faster.
Before contacting us, you can prepare:
A screenshot of the error message
A photo of your CCTV recorder or intercom
The model number, if visible
Whether the system works locally
Whether the problem happens on WiFi, mobile data or both
When the problem started
Whether your router, internet connection or phone was recently changed
You don’t need to understand the technical cause.
These details simply help us narrow down where the problem may be coming from.
When Should You Consider Upgrading Your System?
Hik-Connect problems do not necessarily mean your entire security system needs replacing.
However, an upgrade may be worth considering when:
Your CCTV system is already several years old
Cameras frequently fail
Image quality no longer meets your requirements
Recording capacity is insufficient
Replacement parts are difficult to obtain
You want better event detection
You want to integrate CCTV with a video intercom
You’re renovating or upgrading your network
The existing system experiences recurring problems
In these situations, it may be more practical to assess the complete system rather than repeatedly repairing individual components.
