Upgrading Your Video Intercom System: What You Need to Know

Is your existing video intercom getting old, unreliable or no longer meeting your needs?

Perhaps the indoor monitor is no longer working properly. The image is unclear. Replacement parts are becoming difficult to find. Or you simply want newer features such as mobile answering, remote gate access and better integration with your security system.

Upgrading to a modern video intercom system can provide much more than simply replacing an old doorbell.

At Star Security, we help homeowners and businesses assess their existing intercom setup and determine the most suitable way to upgrade it.

Why Upgrade an Existing Video Intercom?

Older intercom systems were primarily designed to let you answer someone at the entrance from an indoor handset or monitor.

Modern video intercom systems can offer significantly more functionality.

Depending on the selected system, an upgrade can provide:

  • Clearer video

  • Touchscreen indoor monitors

  • Mobile app connectivity

  • Remote visitor answering

  • Two-way communication

  • Remote door or gate unlocking

  • Multiple indoor monitors

  • CCTV camera viewing

  • Access control integration

  • Better connectivity with your existing security system

Instead of being just an intercom, the system can become part of your property’s overall security and access solution.

Answer Your Intercom Even When You’re Away

One of the biggest reasons customers upgrade their intercom is mobile connectivity.

With a compatible modern video intercom system, calls from your entrance can also be received on your smartphone.

For example, imagine a delivery arrives while you’re at work.

The visitor presses the intercom.

Your phone receives the call.

You can see who’s there, speak to the visitor and, where the system is configured for it, remotely grant access.

This can be particularly useful for landed properties where the entrance gate is located some distance from the house.

Upgrade From an Old Indoor Monitor to a Touchscreen

Older intercom systems often use basic handsets or smaller displays.

Modern systems can provide touchscreen indoor monitors that act as a central control point for the entrance.

Depending on the system, you can use the monitor to:

  • Answer visitors

  • View the entrance

  • Speak to visitors

  • Unlock the door or gate

  • View compatible CCTV cameras

  • Communicate between indoor monitors

For larger homes, additional monitors can also be considered for different floors or areas.

Can I Keep My Existing Intercom Wiring?

This is one of the most common questions we receive when discussing an intercom upgrade.

Sometimes you can. Sometimes new cabling may be required.

It depends on the existing system and how the property was originally wired.

Before recommending an upgrade, we would typically need to understand the existing setup, including the cabling between the outdoor station and indoor monitor.

Where suitable infrastructure already exists, parts of the existing cabling may potentially be reused.

For other properties, additional cabling may be recommended to support the new system properly.

This is why we generally recommend assessing the existing installation before deciding which replacement system to purchase.

What Will We Check Before Recommending an Upgrade?

You don’t need to know the technical details of your existing intercom system.

That’s our job.

When assessing an existing video intercom, some of the things we look at include:

  • Existing outdoor intercom station

  • Existing indoor monitor

  • Current cabling

  • Location of the equipment

  • Power availability

  • Internet and network availability

  • Existing door or gate connection

  • Electric lock, where applicable

  • Auto gate controls, where applicable

  • Features you would like from the new system

This helps us determine what can potentially be retained and what may need to be upgraded.

It also prevents customers from purchasing equipment first and discovering later that it isn’t suitable for their existing installation.

Can My New Intercom Open My Gate?

Depending on the existing gate system and the selected equipment, a modern video intercom can potentially be integrated with your pedestrian gate, electric lock or auto gate.

For example:

Visitor presses intercom

→ You receive the call

→ See and speak to the visitor

→ Verify who they are

→ Release the connected entrance

For landed homes, this can make visitor access considerably more convenient.

Instead of walking to the gate every time someone arrives, access can be managed from inside the house or, depending on the system, through your mobile phone.

Can I View My CCTV From the Intercom?

Depending on system compatibility, selected CCTV cameras can also be viewed from the indoor intercom monitor.

This can be useful when you want more visibility before allowing somebody into the property.

The intercom camera shows the person directly at the entrance, while your CCTV system can provide a wider view of the surrounding area.

For example, you may want to check:

  • Front gate

  • Driveway

  • Car porch

  • Side entrance

  • Other areas around the property

This is one reason we recommend considering CCTV, intercom and access control as part of the same security environment rather than treating every system independently.

Can I Add Facial Recognition, Card or PIN Access?

Modern entrance systems can also provide different ways for authorised users to enter.

Depending on the equipment selected, these can include:

  • Access cards

  • PIN codes

  • Facial recognition

  • Mobile credentials

  • Other compatible access methods

Visitors can continue pressing the intercom button while residents, employees or other authorised users use their assigned access method.

Whether these features are necessary depends on how you use the property.

We don’t recommend adding features simply because they are available. The objective is to select a system that makes everyday access easier while meeting your security requirements.

What If My Existing Intercom Has Already Stopped Working?

A failed intercom doesn’t necessarily mean the entire installation has to be replaced.

The issue could involve the indoor monitor, outdoor station, power supply, cabling, network or another component within the existing system.

Before replacing everything, it is useful to determine:

What has failed?

What can still be reused?

Is repairing the old system worthwhile?

Would upgrading provide better long-term value?

For older or discontinued systems, upgrading may make more sense than continuing to replace individual components.

Repair or Upgrade?

If your existing system is relatively new and replacement parts remain readily available, repairing it may be the more economical option.

However, upgrading may be worth considering when:

  • The system is already old

  • Parts are becoming difficult to obtain

  • Video quality is poor

  • The indoor monitor is failing

  • The system experiences recurring problems

  • You want mobile answering

  • You want remote unlocking

  • You want CCTV integration

  • You’re renovating the property

  • You’re upgrading other security systems at the same time

Rather than replacing equipment on a like-for-like basis, an upgrade is also an opportunity to consider how you want the entrance to work for the next several years.

Planning a Video Intercom Upgrade?

You don’t necessarily need to know the model of your existing system before contacting us.

A few photos can often help us understand what is currently installed.

If you’re planning an upgrade, you can send us:

  1. A photo of the existing outdoor intercom

  2. A photo of the indoor monitor

  3. A photo showing the entrance or gate

  4. Any model numbers that are visible

  5. A short description of what you would like the new system to do

For example:

“I want to answer the intercom from my phone and open my gate remotely.”

or

“My existing intercom is no longer working and I want to know whether the wiring can be reused.”

From there, we can better understand the existing setup and advise on the next steps.
